Puppies Found Stuffed Inside Suitcase In Back Of Van
A litter of puppies destined for a dog farm was rescued after being found stuffed inside suitcases in the back of a van.
The five one-month-old pups were found exhausted, frightened and suffocating by traffic cops during a routine stop and check in the small Austrian town of Roggendorf in Upper Austria.
Cruel Romanian Ion Stolojan, 45, had pulled over at a motorway service station when he was approached by the officers who asked to see his papers.
But they became suspicious of his behaviour and when they examined the Ford Transit van they stumbled upon the terrified puppies.
A police spokesman said: "There was something about his demeanour that alerted the officers and caused them to pay more attention to his vehicle.
"In the back of the van was lots of junk and dirty old suitcases.
"When officers asked what was inside them he told them clothes because he was going to see a friend in France."
But when the policemen told Stolojan to open the suitcase they found the puppies crowded together and covered in their own faeces.
The man then told them that he was taking the puppies to France as a present for a friend, but they discovered the address of a puppy mill in his wallet and he then confessed he had been planning to sell them.
The man is now facing jail for cruelty, improper transport conditions, and failing to have the correct documents for transporting animals.
The puppies were taken to a local vet for treatment.
Puppy mills are notorious for keeping dogs in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions.
Deprived of adequate veterinary care, food, and water the dogs are also denied adequate attention, exercise, or basic grooming.
To cut down on the amount of waste clean-up, the dogs are often kept in cages with wire flooring that injures their paws and legs.
